Box car racing
Box car racing
So my youngest daughter is in Nursery and her school decided to host a box car racing day. This of course means that all the moms and dads had to figure out how to create a cute looking box car for their little ones to race in.
So where do you even start with a project like this?
Pinterest of course!
I googled and looked up some pictures for inspiration and got the little one's vote on which car she liked the most. She obviously chose the unicorn car - what a surprise!
So I made my list and headed to the shops.
The list:
A decent sized box
White paint
Unicorn paper cups
Tassels
Unicorn paper plates
Unicorn paper masks
Pom pom party decorations
Paper bunting
Pink and purple vinyl
Straps
Glue gun and glue
Boxcutter
Start off by painting the box white. Once it's dried, use the boxcutter to cut out the windshield and remove the top and bottom part of the box so your little one can stand inside.
We had some straps in our garage that we didn't use, so even though they didn't really fit in with the color scheme of the car, we decided to use them anyway to secure the car around her shoulders. Here's the challenge though: getting the car to sit straight across her shoulders, since the front part of the car is heavier than the back, so it keeps sliding forward. Keep adjusting the straps until you get the desired result.
Next, I glued the paper cups to the front of the box to serve as headlights and glued the paper plates to the side to make wheels.
I took one of the unicorn masks and cut off the elastic part and glued it to the front of the box. I also took some of the paper bunting I found and cut two of the triangles smaller than the rest, gluing the smaller ones on top of two of the original ones. I then glued these to the front of the box for the unicorn's ears.
The party tassels were a bit of a mess, but I managed to bundle them together and glued them across the top of the front of the box to serve as tassels hanging over the sides of the car.
Using the pom pom party decoration, I folded it open halfway and glued it to the back of the box for a tail.
Lastly, using my silhouette machine, I cut some unicorn eyelashes, hearts and stars. I stuck the eyelashes to the front of the box, above the headlights and then randomly stuck the hearts and stars around the windscreen part.
Even though the box car didn't really come out exactly as I had imagined, My little one was more than satisfied and extremely excited for her race.
Although the race was purely for fun and no one actually counted the rounds or anything, my little one was adamant that she was going to win this race! She kept running around the house practicing her skills. It was very entertaining to say the least.
